Might be going to work in Iran.....any advice? Serious please, I know its dry country but are there any other things I should be aware of, thank you.Might be going to work in Iran.....any advice?
eh up mate, how are ya? I was out in Iran a month or so back and all was ok to be honest. No real dramas to worry about. The only thing I would say is watch Team America before you go, its a good training video.
Who you working for and in what field? I was in South Pars and apart from the pollution it was ok.
Oh, get a 2nd passport, you will need a letter from work saying that they are sending you to conflicting countries. That means you go into the US on one passport and Iran on an other. Saves a fisting at immigration.Might be going to work in Iran.....any advice?
Ask your doctor if you need any innoculations. Try to drink bottled water, or make sure that the source is safe - my friend worked in Jordan and got a really upset stomach from the drinking water. You will need to drink a lot as you will sweat a lot in the dry heat. Also, wear light, loose clothing and maybe even a head cloth - it really helps to keep you cool. Try to learn some basic language skills - ie greetings, how to ask for directions, etc. Black people and white people often get stared at, especially in the rural areas, but as long as you don't insult anyone ie by refusing the offer of food/tea, etc, then you will probably be treated with a sort of wary respect, certainly in the more rural areas, whereas in the cities you will most likely just blend in.
Good luck with the job!
You can trust what PersianX had to say. I was in Iran in '05 (though not for work) and I had a wonderful time. It will help alot if you learn some basic communication. The book I got the most help from was that small yellow Farsi phrasebook by Lonely Planet. Don't be afraid to go, its really a beautiful country with very friendly people. Its possible you might stand out if you have very fair skin and light hair, and you *might* get some staring, but they have Russians there who look the same so its not as uncommon as you might think. You shouldn't take any sort of porn or soft porn with you, no alcohol, nothing that might be considered political propoganda. Hmmmm....you can find all medicines there except Pepto Bismal. You might want to have a look at some Persian websites to get familiar with the culture. A good place to start is www.persianmirror.com and www.farsinet/farsi.com (scroll down to bottom for basic sayings/words) and www.easypersian.com for everything else, you can search the words for what you want to say and click on the sound clip for help with pronunciation.
All in all, I really don't think you're going to hate it at all. Just respect the customs and people and you'll be fine.
Don't tell them you are British, learn to look like them and keep your mouth shut on politics and religion, oh and don't take a shower two or three time a day or they will think you are a pervert, Muslims are supposed to wash every time they have sex because its dirty
get as much info about the customs and traditions there so you don't get in trouble....research what your embassy can do for you in case of emergency (lot of earthquakes) and evacuation procedures.....
Consider alternatives.
Keep your head down!!! Its not the safest place in the world, do you really have to go?
Good luck.. first of on what basis did you say that Iran is a dry country?? unless you are going to the southern cities http://www6.worldisround.com/photos/28/1鈥?/a> this is tehran in winter. You should be aware of what you are saying because the Iranian people and government are protective and it's not like western countries that you will walk in the streets and swear at anyone left and right. There are many advantages of living in Iran such as low living costs, friendly people, a four seosoned country which is very rare in middle east. They are not going to jail you or hang you like what the other answerers said unless you do a crime (just like anywhere else in the world). If you respect the cultures and people you will for sure be welcomed and respected and you don't need to make yourself look like an Iranian since expats are welcomed there too
you may want to look at some pictures of Iran to get a better idea
