I am supposed to be packing the house while my husband is at work. We are just moving a few miles away and are doing it ourselves. Tomorrow, we will have a big truck to haul the furnture, but today I am supposed to get all the other stuff together. What is the best way to go about this? Dishes and clothes and knick-knacks? I am not really packing well b/c it is such a short drive so I do not need to to like wrap dishes, I am just gonna stack them and drive carefully. ANy suggestions? Should I pack by Room or by like item or just how it fits the best?Moving Advice- What is the best way to pack quickly?

Pack room by room and label all boxes by room; i.e., label all boxes that are meant to go to the kitchen as ';kitchen';. Decide which boxes you will want to open first and label these. For instance, you will want to have sheets for your bed even if you don't unpack all the bedroom boxes the day you move. Be sure that you label the boxes to be opened first. Don't expect to remember which boxes they are.
You say that you do not need to wrasp the dishes. At least pack them so that they will not shift in the box. You can move the boxes faster if you don't have to worry about the contents shifting.
Not only room-by-room, but also place-by-place in each room. Then when you get there it's REALLY sorted out for you, and you can leave low-priority boxes for later.
dishes with clothes-no breakage
the rest depends on how organized -when you started
I always try to pack room by room. While you are packing you stay in the same room. so you're not running all over the place. This saves on time. It can also help get unpacked faster.
when you pack up your stuff, dont look at the things that you dug out of the bottom of your closet. put it in a box and look at it later when you get to your new house.
i would get the stuff sorted by dishes and utensils, clothing, misc. or you can always seperate them by rooms. that would be easier too
I go room by room.
I had 24 hours to get to another job. I packed the breakables first (took care with them ) stuff I really didn't care if they got broken or were unbreakable I shoved into construction bags and left:p It wasn't a short distance either(6 hours away)you should be fine just get some friends to help an you'll be all packed in a few hours.
See Flylady for her packing tips. If you can leave things in drawers and just wrap them with saran wrap and put them back in dressers. Ask the moving people if they can bring wardrobe boxes for your clothes. That way you just hang then in there and don't have to pack them. Pack your breakable with towels, paper towels or tea towels - kill two birds at once. One of the best tips I got was to put all my packing supplies - tape, markers, scissors etc in a small Rubbermaid type container and take it from room to room and always but the supplies back in it. That way you are not hunting through a mess trying to find them. Get your boxes, pack room by room and make sure the boxes are full to the top so they do not collapse. Good Luck!
