ok so im from NY and this will be my first big trip and essentially i dont even know where to begin or what to expect, ive flown in a plane before but i was like 5 or 6 so its been about 15 years and i know that things have definitely changed on that aspect and the only other country ive been to is Canada. so any advice about things in Germany or traveling internationally would be super helpful, thanks in advanceIm planning a trip to germany in '10 or '11. any advice or tips would be helpful?
Get a good guidebook for independent travel, Rick Steves, Rough Guide, Let's Go or Lonely Planet are good.
Most of the info you need is in these guidebooks, rent a few from your local library and read them carefully cover to cover. When you leave make sure your copy is not older than 2 years, as information in guidebooks is quickly outdated. Buy a new one if necessary, they are not that expensive.
You'll need a passport and a lot of money, plan on bringing roughly 60 EUR for every day you intend to stay in Germany. I don't know how much this is going to be in USD when you finally go, but in the last years it was between 75-100 USD. The flight should be somewhere around 650 USD if oil prices don't change too much and if you go in off-season.
